Missouri's rule requiring pornographic websites to verify users' ages went into effect Sunday.

A news release from Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said that within hours of the rule taking effect, Pornhub announced it would shut down access to its website in Missouri rather than comply with the regulation.

The regulation, which the Missouri Attorney General's Office enacted through the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act, requires pornographic sites to implement age-verification measures or face enforcement action to prevent minors from accessing sexually explicit material, according to previous KOMU 8 reporting .

The rule applies to commercial websites and platforms where one-third or more of the content is pornographic or sexually explicit.
