The Trump administration is demanding states provide information about individuals receiving federal food assistance, with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stating the goal is to eliminate abuse in the program.
"We have begun and will begin to stop moving federal funds into those states until they comply, and they tell us, and allow us to partner with them to root out this fraud and to protect the American taxpayer," Rollins said.
A USDA spokesperson explained after Rollins' comments that the agency is targeting administrative funds, not the benefits people receive.
Rollins said more than 25 mostly Republican-led states have agreed to provide the requested information, which includes SNAP recipients' names and immigration status.
