U.S. President Donald Trump says he does not want Somali immigrants in the United States, urging them to “go back to where they came from.”
Trump made the comments to reporters during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, while also describing Somali immigrants and Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar as “garbage.”
Omar, a Democrat, was born in Mogadishu and is the first Somali-American elected to Congress.
“They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country,” Trump told reporters near the end of the cabinet meeting. He added: “Somebody will say, ‘Oh, that’s not politically correct.’ I don’t care. I don’t want them in our country.”
Somalis have been coming to Minnesota and other states, often as refugees, since the 1990s, according to an Associated Press report.
