A raccoon broke into a liquor store in Ashland, Virginia, and ransacked the shelves.

Authorities responding to a break-in at a Virginia liquor store apprehended an unlikely suspect: a drunk raccoon.

The raccoon broke into the Virginia ABC store in Ashland, Virginia, in the early morning hours on Nov. 29. After ransacking the shelves, the raccoon passed out intoxicated in the bathroom, the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter said in a statement.

When officials arrived on scene, they secured the animal and transported him back to a shelter. After a few hours of sleep and no signs of injury, "other than maybe a hangover and poor life choices," the raccoon was safely released back to the wild, the statement said.

Virginia ABC, the state-run agency that oversees the store, said in a statement that it "appreciates the professionalism" of animal protection officers in responding to the scene and "providing our visitor with a sober ride home."

Raccoon went on 'a full-blown rampage'

Samantha Martin, the animal protection officer who responded to the scene, told the Associated Press that the raccoon fell through one of the ceiling tiles at the store and "went on a full-blown rampage, drinking everything.”

Photos of the scene show a variety of bottles, including some shattered, strewn across a store aisle. Another photo shows the suspect in question lying on the floor of the store's bathroom, apparently unconscious.

Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter said in a Facebook comment that there is no video footage of the incident because the cameras were lost in the incident.

"As Rocky entered the building through the ceiling he took the cameras down with him," the agency wrote.

The break-in came just days after Thanksgiving. While the Ashland ABC store was closed on the Nov. 27 holiday, it reopened for Black Friday.

Ashland is in central Virginia, about 16 miles north of Richmond.

'I'd be in the bathroom too'

Thousands of people on social media commiserated with the raccoon's unfortunate fate.

"I’d be in the bathroom too after mixing all that," one person wrote on Facebook, while another said, "Who amongst us haven't passed out by the toilet after a bender?"

Some people commended his attempt to make it to the bathroom.

"At least he had the good sense to get near the toilet," one said.

Others' reactions dabbled in wordplay.

"I’ve heard of drunk as a skunk, but never drunk as a raccoon," one user said.
