CANTON – The man accused of killing Ryan Godbey died by suicide the morning of Dec. 3 at the Stark County Jail, Sheriff Eric Weisburn said.
The incident involving Daniel Z. Mattay occurred at 9:22 a.m.
Jail staff and medical personnel provided immediate medical care, and CPR was performed, the sheriff said in a news release. Mattay was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital by the Canton Fire Department where he was pronounced deceased, the Sheriff's Office said.
Mattay was scheduled to attend a plea hearing on Dec. 10.
Mattay had been charged with murder, felonious assault, strangulation, domestic violence, tampering with evidence and gross abuse of a corpse. The indictment alleged Mattay killed the 26-year-old Godbey on or about June 20. The same date is given for the other
