DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - Two men from Venezuela and one man from Columbia have been sentenced in Cedar Rapids’ federal district court on bank larceny charges connected to an ATM jackpotting scheme in Dubuque.
Ysmael Martinez Jimenez, 38, and Cristian Guillermo Canas Gomez, 22, said they conspired to commit the bank larceny.
Officials say the two stole $33,600 on May 25 from an ATM at a bank in Dubuque. The scheme involves attacking an ATM’s software vulnerabilities so it dispenses cash without connecting to an account.
Jhonger Suarez, 23, admitted in a plea hearing to assisting with the scheme, acting as a lookout as the crime occurred.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Martinez Jimenez and Canas Gomez to six months in prison, and Suarez to 125 days in prison.
