In a major victory for Mayor Daniel Lurie, the Board of Supervisors gave initial approval Tuesday to his controversial “Family Zoning” plan, which charts how The City can meet a state mandate for accommodating tens of thousands of new homes by 2031.
By adopting the plan by a 7-4 vote, the board took a major step toward meeting a Jan. 31 state deadline, after which The City could lose local control over land-use planning as well as access to state funding for housing and transportation. Before it goes to the mayor for signing, the board must vote a second time to give final approval to the plan, which would largely add housing density in northern and western neighborhoods.
