One teen was killed and several others injured after crashing a pickup truck, overturning, and landing in a Maryland embankment.
First responders were called shortly after 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, to the area of Jasontown Road near the intersection of John Hyde Road in Westminster, where there was a reported crash, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say that a 16-year-old driver in a Ford F-250 was heading east on Jasontown Road when he failed to negotiate a turn and went off the roadway.
The truck then went down an embankment, overturned, and came to rest on its roof — partially in Little Pipe Creek.
Five teenage boys were inside the pickup.
The driver, a 16-year-old male from Westminster, and three rear-seat passengers were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for further care.
Two were flown out by Maryland State Police Aviation, and two were taken by CCDFEMS medic units, officials said.
The front-seat passenger, a 16-year-old with a Westminster address, was taken to Carroll Hospital by a CCDFEMS medic unit, where he was later pronounced dead, the sheriff's office confirmed.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit responded and is now leading the investigation.
“Charges, if appropriate, will be determined at a later time based on the Crash Reconstruction Unit’s findings and consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office,” officials said.
The sheriff’s office noted that “out of respect for the families involved, no additional information will be provided until the conclusion of the investigation.”
