A veteran Brooks RCMP officer faces two assault charges following an investigation, police said Wednesday.

The southern Alberta RCMP detachment began Nov. 20 to investigate the officer’s off-duty conduct.

As a result of that investigation, Cpl. Michael Hagel, 40, has been charged with assault and assault by choking.

The nine-year RCMP member is currently suspended from duty with pay.

Hagel was released on a release order after a hearing and is scheduled to attend court in Brooks on Jan. 7.
