There’s no question that affordable housing is a big issue, a hot button topic in Chatham-Kent these days, and for good reason.
But it’s starting to look like we’re living in a municipality without any real plan to address the matter short of buying vacant school properties for future projects.

Back in 2021, council approved a recommendation that empowers administration to submit expressions of interest on the municipality’s behalf “when surplus properties are made available from school boards or other levels of government … to determine if the property warrants consideration to purchase for housing opportunities ….”
Earlier this year, council also approved a follow-up motion from Coun. Anthony Ceccacci which expands that to include privately owned properties.
