OTTAWA — Former federal minister Chrystia Freeland believes Ukraine has the potential to become a significant economic force in Europe. She made these remarks during her first major speech in Canada since being appointed as Prime Minister Mark Carney's special envoy for Ukraine's reconstruction in September.
Freeland highlighted that Ukraine missed key economic opportunities following its independence in 1991, particularly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, she expressed optimism that the country can realize its potential once the ongoing conflict with Russia concludes. "Ukraine is a fantastic investment for the businesses that have the courage to invest now," Freeland stated, encouraging Canadian companies to seize the opportunity early.
In addition to her economic insights, Freeland addressed a recent corruption scandal in Ukraine, framing it as evidence of a functioning democracy. She noted that the investigation into possible wrongdoing demonstrates a commitment to accountability and transparency.
Freeland's comments coincided with Ottawa's announcement of an additional $235 million in support for Ukraine through NATO. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand explained that this funding will assist Ukraine in covering essential costs, including fuel, medical supplies, and winter gear.
The Canadian government continues to express its support for Ukraine amid ongoing challenges, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in the region's recovery and stability.
