Amid concerns about the just-launched immigration sweep in the New Orleans area , the East Baton Rouge Parish school system is assuring parents and students that district policy bars law enforcement from removing students from school unless “authorized to do so by a parent/legal guardian or pursuant to an order from the court.”
“This policy was adopted several years ago to enhance the parents' ability to protect their children’s rights,” wrote Superintendent LaMont Cole in a one-page letter. “All principals have been briefed on this protocol."
Cole’s letter, which is also in Spanish, was distributed to principals Wednesday, who in turn distributed it to parents. The letter was not otherwise publicized by the school district.
