The B.C. Conservative Party has officially removed John Rustad from his position as party leader. This decision follows a letter signed by 20 MLAs, which indicated a loss of confidence in his leadership. The announcement was made on Wednesday after a caucus vote that resulted in MLA Trevor Halford being appointed as the interim leader.

In a statement, the party confirmed that a majority of the caucus had informed its legal counsel of their lack of support for Rustad. The party's board of directors subsequently certified Rustad as "professionally incapacitated" under section 11.02 of its constitution. This classification allowed the board to proceed with his removal and appoint Halford in his place.

Earlier in the day, Rustad had expressed to reporters that he had no intention of resigning. He maintained that the party's constitution stipulates that a leader can only be removed through resignation, death, incapacitation, or a leadership review. Despite his assertions, the party stated that it respects the democratic will of the majority of the caucus.

The situation escalated after lawyer Bruce Hallsor communicated with party president Aisha Estey, indicating he had received letters from the 20 MLAs calling for Rustad's removal. The party's media release acknowledged Rustad's contributions, stating, "The Conservative Party of British Columbia would like to extend its deepest gratitude to John Rustad, who led our party into its ascendance and made history. We wish him and his family all the best in their next chapter."

With Halford now serving as interim leader, the party plans to initiate the process for an official leadership race.
