DOVER – Property taxes for Highland Orchards in Wilmington recently rose by 350% – and that was before Delaware’s reassessment efforts; it rose another $11,000 when final tax bills arrived in November.

Delaware Farm Bureau Government Affairs Coordinator Sydnie Grossnickle said Highland Orchards was just one of many farms and businesses impacted by the reassessment efforts. Business and trade organization leaders were on hand during the fourth of five hearings of the House and Senate Special Property Reassessment Joint Committee on Dec. 2 to talk to legislators about their concerns.

The hearings were scheduled to help lawmakers better understand the reassessment that was the first in decades across Delaware.

“Our Kent County farmers were also struggling. . .,” she told committee members.
