A new bridge has been lowered into place over the River Irwell almost exactly 10 years after flooding destroyed the previous crossing. A meticulous operation this week, saw contractors painstakingly lower the massive steel structure for the footbridge into place.

It will connect in Milltown Street to Rectory Lane in Radcliffe . The £3.2m project will replace the bridge washed away by Storm Eva on Boxing Day, 2015.

As part of the Bee Network, the project is being funded by UK Government City Regional Transport Settlement and the Mayor’s Challenge Fund. The bridge reconstruction project is being delivered by local civil engineering contractor Bethell and the structure was fabricated in Nottingham.

Pedestrians and cyclists will have to wait a while before the bridge is open to the public
