New Mexico State linebacker Tyler Martinez will redshirt his 2025 season and return for 2026, coach Tony Sanchez confirmed during a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Martinez was eligible to be redshirted since he only played four games this season. He suffered a high ankle sprain against New Mexico on Sept. 27 and missed the rest of the season.
Sanchez said Martinez could've returned for one of the Aggies' final few games of the season, but he believed NM State's other linebackers — notably Sone Aupiu, Tory Gethers (whose agent has since announced his impending transfer portal entry) and Quincy Davis — were playing well in his place, and he didn't want to burn a potential redshirt.
