Plans for the creation of a battery storage unit in Gateshead have been recommended for refusal. A council report into the application which would be based at Dunston and Teams has found a number of environmental and safety concerns which have not yet been resolved.
Gateshead council officers have called for the rejection of proposals to install a “Battery Energy Storage System” (BESS) on brownfield land on Cross Lane over several ecological concerns. The system, according to the council’s report, would help balance the national grid by charging batteries during periods of low energy consumption and discharging during periods of peak demand.
