FARGO — Ahead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine advisory committee meeting to discuss the pediatric vaccine schedule and hepatitis B shots given to newborns, local pediatricians are explaining how important the hepatitis B vaccine is for your baby.
They say the current recommendation is for newborns to get the first dose of the vaccine within 24 hours of birth.
That's because, while Hep-B is commonly known to be spread through sex or sharing needles, it can also be passed from a mother to a baby during birth.
Hep-B can damage the liver and even lead to liver cancer or liver failure.
Doctors say if a baby gets Hep-B, it can lead to a lifetime of health issues.
