The Trump administration’s reaction to the shooting of two members of the National Guard before Thanksgiving has left Afghans who settled in Western Massachusetts concerned and fearful, according to groups who work with them.
Several families here, for instance, were separated during the airlifts in 2021 when the U.S. military pulled out of the country, said Tricia Sayre, Western Massachusetts program manager for Welcoming Alliance for Refugee Ministry . WARM operates a location in West Springfield, working with about 100 families, 75% of which are from Afghanistan.
“They were hopeful that, maybe, as time went on, there would be that reunification, but they just don’t see that hope right now in this current administration,” Sayre said.
