A city oversight agency has found “gaps” in the way the NYPD complies with legal limits on cooperating with federal immigration authorities in the Trump administration’s roundup of possibly undocumented people that has caused unrest in parts of the city.
In reviewing five incidents involving ICE, the Department of Investigation report found that the Police Department generally complied with sanctuary laws barring cooperation with civil immigration enforcement. But in one instance, police may have improperly coordinated with the feds.
“DOI has concluded that the NYPD has been working diligently to ensure that its policies with respect to assisting federal law enforcement agencies comply with local laws,” the report found.
