King County Executive Girmay Zahilay has chosen three nominees to fill the vacancy on the Metropolitan King County Council that was created when he was elected executive last month and left the council.
Zahilay chose Nimco Bulale, Cherryl Jackson-Williams and Rhonda Lewis as options to fill his old seat, representing parts of Seattle, Tukwila and Skyway.
The County Council will interview the three candidates at its meeting on Tuesday and then choose one to serve through next year’s election.
All three candidates, Zahilay said, have pledged to serve as a placeholder and to not run for a full term in the 2026 election.
Whoever of the three candidates is chosen, Zahilay said, will be the first Black woman to serve on the King County Council. Once one of the three is chosen, and following
