An annual tradition dating back to 1931, a landmark holiday event is set to take place in the Big Apple on Wednesday evening, Dec. 3: the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
This year's tree, a 75-foot-tall Norway Spruce approximately 75 years old, hails from upstate New York, just outside of Albany. Weighing in at 11 tons and 45 feet in diameter, the tree is decorated with 50,000 multicolored lights and a 900-pound Swarovski star, according to the Rockefeller Center website.
