HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii is taking TikTok’s parent company to court.

Hawaii’s attorney general announced Wednesday a lawsuit filed against Bytedance Inc., alleging that the social media giant knowingly designed an addictive platform that harms users, particularly children, while misleading the public about the risks.

The complaint alleges that TikTok’s business model is built on compulsive use, employing “coercive design tactics” to keep users engaged for as long as possible to mine personal data and generate advertising revenue.

The complaint alleges that these addictive techniques are especially harmful to children, who TikTok knows have limited ability to self-regulate their screen time.
