Authorities are investigating after a man was fatally shot by Sterling Heights police after an armed standoff during a welfare check.
The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive, near 19 Mile and Dequindre roads, Sterling Heights police said in a news release.
Officers were called to a condominium complex to make a welfare check on a “possibly suicidal” male. When they arrived, police made contact with the individual, who was holding a loaded handgun and appeared to be undergoing a mental health episode, Lt. Aaron Susalla said in the release.
The officers called for trained negotiators who arrived and began talking to the subject for over an hour.
