MECHANICSBURG –- The implementation of a shot clock in Pennsylvania high school boys’ and girls’ basketball games will become effective for the 2028-29 season.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) adopted the long anticipated and much discussed change Wednesday, following a third and final reading at its December agenda meeting.

The vote was unanimous by the PIAA Board of Directors.

The state’s governing body of high school sports passed a first reading on the introduction of a 35-second basketball shot clock in July.

In September, the PIAA basketball steering committee met to discuss and advise the Board of Directors on the shot clock adoption. The Board voted to move ahead with a third and final reading at that time.

Currently, 31 states and Washington D.C.
