AMHERST - What appeared to be a resounding victory turned into a nail-biter as the UMass men’s basketball team held on to beat Harvard, 78-71, Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.

“We have to figure out who we want to be,” UMass coach Frank Martin said. “Do we want to be the team that is in total control of a game against a really good team for 25 minutes, or do we want to be the team that just tries to be cute and chill and relaxed and almost give a game away because of those things?”

Marcus Banks Jr. scored a team-high 29 points for the Minutemen (5-3), who won their second straight. UMass led by as much as 23 early in the second half, but couldn’t slow Harvard sophomore guard Robert Hinton.
