STANFORD — For the first time ever, Tennessee and Stanford met on a basketball court without either Pat Summitt or Tara VanDerveer on the sideline.
The storied rivalry between the two historic women’s basketball powers is now under the purview of Stanford coach Kate Paye and Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell, as Summitt stepped down in 2012 and VanDerveer retired in 2024.
The first matchup between the two teams since 2022 saw VanDerveer watching from the stands as Paye’s Cardinal fell 65-62 to the No. 19 Lady Volunteers.
Neither program is a national championship contender these days, but the matchup served as a good measuring stick for both teams.
