TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - There are 16,000 truck driving schools currently in the U.S., and nearly half may have to close.
The Federal Transportation Department announced it could revoke the accreditation of nearly 7,000 schools , including 10 in southern Arizona.
This comes after a review found that many providers are allegedly not complying with government requirements.
The move is said to be the government going after bad actors, to make sure our roads are as safe as possible.
But it could also add to the ongoing commercial truck driver shortage.
Ensuring that truck drivers are qualified and eligible to hold a commercial license is the main reason for the government’s crackdown, and it starts in the classroom.
