The Cairngorm Mountain Railway – Scotland’s only mountain funicular railway, and the highest railway in the UK — has reopened to the public.

The reopened service begins on 27 February 2025, following a lengthy programme of structural remediation and safety work

The covers a 2km route, climbing from the Base Station up to the top station (the Ptarmigan Top Station) at over 1,000 metres altitude, giving access to panoramic mountain and forest views without needing to hike.

The top station includes the UK’s highest-altitude restaurant and bar, an observation terrace, and amenities like a gift shop and exhibition, making it attractive not only to skiers but also to sightseers and families

The reopening is seen as a boost for tourism and local businesses in the region as the fun
