Years ago, someone told me you can find truffles in New Jersey. I was skeptical, but it didn’t seem so far-fetched: these odiferous nuggets of culinary renown grow under oak, pine and other trees (we have those) in temperate climates that get ample rain (that’s mostly us, too) and can be found with a little local foraging knowledge and, if you have one on hand, a pig or a dog with some training.
I had an untrained beagle; close enough, I thought. We scoured the Central Jersey woods and though we were ostensibly looking for truffles, ended up on a proverbial wild goose chase.
Now that’s not evidence truffles don’t grow in New Jersey (though you may have more luck spotting the Jersey Devil), just that I haven’t found any. But you can , in fact, find fresh truffles in New Jersey; you’ll
