Ruby Wax was born on April 19, 1953, in Evanston, Illinois, to Edward and Berthe Wachs, a Jewish couple from Austria. Her parents had fled Vienna in 1938 because of the ever-growing threat of the Nazi party.
Once the family settled in Chicago, Edward changed their surname from Wachs to Wax. Ruby moved to the UK in the 1970s and has lived here ever since, becoming a UK citizen while keeping her American citizenship.
She first moved to , where she studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1978, two years after marrying theatre administrator Andrew Porter.
