LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered the U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered on Friday, Dec. 5 in honor of former state Representative Fred Durhal Jr.
Durhal was born in Rochester, New York, and raised in Detroit, where he graduated from Northwestern High School. He later attended Wayne State University, Wayne County Community College District and the University of Phoenix, where he majored in Political Science and Government Administration.
He began his public service career in 2002 when he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, where he served three and a half terms. Durhal was also the first Black Political Director of the Michigan State Democratic Party, as well as Executive Director, and later Chairman, of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus
