ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - As we enter the thick of the winter months, you may be tempted to run to the thermostat and turn up the heat.

But with every push of the button, your energy usage goes up, and so does your bill.

“You know, we had your thermostat set at 72 and the temperature was 70. It’s a lot different when the temperature drops down in the 30s and 20s. It just means your unit has to work that much harder,” George Porter with Appalachian Power said. “The harder their unit works, the more energy you’re using. And obviously, as we’ve talked about before, the more you use, the more your costs are going to go up.”

The holidays are fast approaching and the decorations are lighting the house 24/7. Porter says you may want to flip the switch in those lights if you want to use less energy
