In 1936, actress Greta Garbo attended the Plaza Theatre's opening night for the world premiere of her film "Camille" and reportedly slipped into the back after the lights dimmed. The evening established an iconic identity for the downtown Palm Springs venue, which continued Monday when another leading lady welcomed back patrons for the theater's second life.
Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo crooned her way across the newly renovated theater’s stage on Dec. 1 for its grand reopening night gala. She was accompanied by her music director Mark G. Meadows on piano and the newly launched Palm Springs Pops orchestra.
