LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Radio station KFAB took to the air on this day in 1924, beginning a broadcast legacy that has spanned over a century.
The station started in Lincoln and was owned by the Nebraska Buick Auto Company. The company’s owner requested the KFAB call sign, reportedly standing for “Keep Following a Buick.”
After two decades in Lincoln, the station relocated to Omaha and moved to 1110 on the AM dial. A few years later, KFAB began transmitting with 50,000 watts of power.
Over the years, many famous voices have worked at the station. Among them was Johnny Carson, who wrote and did shows on KFAB while a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Longtime morning drive host Gary Sadlemyer is retiring from the station this month after nearly 50 years on the air.
