Darius Slay's NFL career might not continue on with the Buffalo Bills after all.
One day after the team claimed the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback off waivers, Slay has decided not to report to Buffalo while he weighs whether he wants to keep playing.
“Slay is honored that a first-class organization like the Bills claimed him, but he is going to take some time away from football right now and decide in the next few days if he wants to keep playing,” Slay’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN.
Slay, 34, was waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, ending his run with the team that signed him to a one-year, $10 million contract this offseason. After starting nine games, Slay had seen his role reduced in recent weeks and then was a healthy scratch for the team's loss to the Bills on Sunday, when Asante Samuel Jr. took over at cornerback.
The Bills claimed Slay in a bid to add depth behind Christian Benford, Tre'Davious White and Maxwell Hairston on the outside. Now, however, the veteran's future is up in the air.
The Philadelphia Eagles, for whom Slay played from 2020-24, also made a waiver claim for the cornerback, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Bills, however, were ahead in the order.
Buffalo hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
