The University of Alabama suspended all activities of two of its student-led magazines, Alice Magazine and Nineteen Fifty-Six. The former focused on women's issues and the latter on Black culture.

The university said its decision was made to "comply with our legal obligations," pointing to a July memo from the Department of Justice outlining federal antidiscrimination laws.

Some questioned how the university perceived the magazines' activities to be in violation of federal policy. One of the magazine's editors emphasized that people of all backgrounds could participate.

The matter follows similar student press freedom issues at other schools, including Indiana University and the University of Central Oklahoma.
