When historians of the future compile lists of great Speakers of the House, of the titans who ruled the People’s Chamber with an iron fist and implacable determination, Mike Johnson probably won’t get a lot of attention. While he has done a reasonably good job of keeping his troops in line with a huge amount of help from Donald Trump , he is not the sort of politician who inspires a lot of fear or love. Indeed, he often comes across as that nerdy kid in high school who walked around with a “Kick Me!” sign on his back, wondering why everyone was laughing at him.

So it’s not surprising that when Republicans are unhappy they tend to take out their bad feelings on their ostensible leader. And there’s an awful lot of that going on at present, as the New York Times reports :
