NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - State and local authorities are investigating after a woman was found dead on a DeKalb County road with a gun beside her.

Bryant Dunaway, the District Attorney General for Tennessee’s 13th Judicial District, shared news of the investigation Thursday morning. He said that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now on the case with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

He wrote in a Facebook post that deputies found the 41-year-old woman’s body on Smithville Highway early Thursday morning near Captain’s Point Road while responding to “a call involving a shooting.”

She had multiple “apparent gunshot wounds,” per the DA.

“A loaded and cocked handgun was lying next to her body,” said a Facebook post from the district attorney general.
