To the Editor:
Many of us know someone who experienced the misery of untreated HIV: wasting, fevers, skin covered with lesions, blindness, pneumocystis pneumonia, dementia, followed by a miserable, premature death. Commemorating World AIDS Day, which the United States has done since 1998, ensures that their suffering will not have been in vain.
But on Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, the Trump regime announced that it will no longer commemorate that day — or any day associated with a particular disease. A State Department spokesperson claims that “it is working directly with foreign governments to save lives and increase their responsibility and burden sharing.”
