Two men have been arrested in connection with a violent home invasion and kidnapping that occurred late Tuesday night in Rexdale, Toronto. Authorities are still searching for two additional suspects involved in the incident.
The event began around 11 p.m. when a man arrived at his home on John Garland Boulevard and Martin Grove Road. As he parked his red Honda Civic, a group of four men confronted him at gunpoint. The suspects forced the victim back into his vehicle and drove him around the area for approximately an hour, making demands, according to police.
After returning to the victim's home, the suspects confronted another man, the homeowner, and brandished a shotgun. They forced both men inside the house, where a third victim was asleep. All three were held at gunpoint while the suspects ransacked the home, stealing jewelry, clothing, cash, and cannabis before fleeing in the homeowner's blue Ford F-150.
Police were alerted to the situation around 12:48 a.m. on Wednesday. Officers spotted one of the stolen vehicles near Highway 401 and Weston Road at about 1:45 a.m. They managed to block in the red Honda Civic, prompting one suspect to attempt to flee on foot. During the arrest, he allegedly pointed a loaded handgun at the officers, who successfully subdued him and seized the weapon.
The second stolen vehicle, the blue F-150, was tracked to a dead-end street near Albion Road and Islington Avenue. The driver reportedly tried to charge at police before fleeing again. Officers later apprehended this suspect after a brief foot chase near St. Clair Avenue West and Runnymede Road.
The first suspect arrested, identified as 35-year-old Jermain Smith, faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, and theft of a motor vehicle. He is also charged with pointing a loaded firearm at an officer. The second suspect, 30-year-old Tajahan Kelly, is charged with failing to comply with release conditions and possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.
Police have released limited descriptions of the two suspects still at large and are urging anyone with information or relevant security footage to come forward. Investigators are continuing their efforts to locate the remaining suspects involved in this incident.
