A new bill from Alberta’s United Conservative Party (UCP) sets new restrictions on party names that the government says are about clarity but would also effectively block efforts to revive one of its foundational parties, while also paving the way for a separatist group to launch its own referendum campaign on the province seceding from Canada.
Bill 14 — the Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 — was introduced in the legislature by Justice Minister Mickey Amery on Thursday afternoon and amends seven existing pieces of legislation.
Amery cited the need to reduce voter confusion with the bill outlining a list of words and phrases that he says could be mistakenly associated with a political party different than that intended.
