In a new documentary, Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of incarcerated Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, describes a beginning shrouded in isolation and a marriage built on willful unawareness. Her account paints a picture of a teenager disconnected from the world's news, who fell for an older man's charm without knowing — or later asking — about the source of his power.

Coronel insists she was unaware of Guzmán's notoriety when they met in 2007. Growing up on a ranch in Durango without electricity or running water, she claims she had never seen the news reports about the drug lord. "Honestly, the Emma of those times, I don't know if she really thought much about the future," she reflects in the Oxygen documentary "Married to El Chapo: Emma Coronel Speaks."
