NEW ALBANY, Ind. —

An agreement has been reached between New Albany and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources after a tense battle over a dam.

The city of New Albany has been fighting the removal of the Providence Mill Dam for the last four years.

The dam has been at the center of legal battles and is the site where a 14-year-old boy died on Memorial Day in 2024.

Following the boy's drowning, Mayor Jeff Gahan ordered emergency maintenance to restore the dam. This cost the city $124,000 and spurred a legal battle with the DNR.

Now the city and DNR have reached an agreement, which will see the removal of the dam. It is set to be removed by the end of the year.

Materials from emergency maintenance project will be collected by the city and used in a future water feature.
