LETTS, Iowa (KCRG) - Rising costs and inflation are making it hard for some nonprofits to stay operating.
Iowa’s only parrot rescue is one of them.
For almost 30 years the Iowa Parrot Rescue has cared for birds in need of a home.
But today, the cost of caring for the 60 birds there is the most expensive it’s ever been.
“We use fresh fruits and vegetables for part of our diet. Five years ago, we were spending $25 a week on that. It’s $125 a week now. For the same stuff,” Iowa Parrot Rescue’s owner Michael Hutchison said.
It takes about a hundred dollars a month to care for each bird for a total of $6,000 needed each month.
Right now the rescue is $2,000 short.
One of the rising costs the rescue is facing is bird feed.
“I don’t know why it’s increased so much. But it’s gotten to the
