The California Academy of Sciences has released the cause of death for Claude, the beloved albino alligator at the San Francisco museum.

The museum said Claude had been showing signs of illness for the last month and was refusing to eat.

He was on antibiotics for a suspected infection and was scheduled to visit UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine this week but died on Tuesday before his appointment.

A necropsy performed at UC Davis revealed that Claude had a massive tumor on his liver, showcasing liver cancer.

Veterinarians said it's difficult to diagnose health issues in alligators because they hide their illnesses.
