INDIANAPOLIS — Twice a week at the Immigrant Welcome Center on Meridian Street in Indianapolis , you can find adult students in the classroom where they learn to read, write and speak English.
Par Mawi is one of those students. Originally from Myanmar, she moved to Indiana six years ago.
"Reading, writing, speak I love," Mawi said.
Mawi earned her citizenship last month and wants to strengthen her English. She's noticed a difference, too.
"Better. I go to doctor appointment and my neighbor English speak," she said it also helps when it comes to her children's school work.
English classes are one of many resources at IWC. They help people study for the citizenship exam, find immigration attorney resources and more. IWC does a lot of bipartisan advocacy work at the state level, as well.
