UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Firefighters are investigating what caused a house fire Thursday afternoon that killed 13 pets in University Place.
The blaze broke out just after noon at a home on Menlo Drive West, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue. By the time crews arrived, seven dogs and six cats had died from smoke inhalation.
"None of them could be resuscitated. The smoke was too thick," homeowner Derek Smith said through tears.
A neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke and told dispatchers that pets might be inside, but firefighters arrived too late to save them.
Crews carried out all 13 animals, including several cat breeds and German shepherds, which Smith described as "loyal" and "great protectors."
It took about 24 firefighters approximately two hours to extinguish the flames.
