LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan State University’s Recycling Center is offering residents an alternative to throwing away broken holiday lights through a special collection program.
The program addresses a common holiday frustration while helping the environment and waste management companies, said Chris Hewitt, operations coordinator for MSU Recycling.
“Every year for two weeks after Thanksgiving, we collect holiday lights here at the MSU Recycling Drop-off Center. Inside is copper wiring, which can be recycled,” said Hewitt.
Holiday lights pose problems for standard recycling operations because of their design.
“In the industry, [light strands are] known as a tangler. If you put it in your curbside bin, it will get caught in the machinery. So, we do the special collection here, so w
