SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane County deputy prosecutor Jonathan Deegan says Caleb Hulings stabbed Alvin Gallegos to death in April 2023. Thursday Deegan also said the 20-year-old shouldn’t serve any more time in jail for the crime.

During a plea and sentencing Thursday, Hulings pleaded guilty to manslaughter under an Alford plea. He was originally charged with second degree murder for stabbing Gallegos, 76, multiple times in the face and neck.

Judge Tony Hazel, when granting Hulings credit for nearly two years already served per the plea deal, noted that the crime is still serious and that a member of the community lost their life. Though he agreed with prosecutors and the defense that to proceed with trial was risky for both sides.
